TOP 20 Hospitals is a hospital assessment programme based on objective indicators obtained from routinely registered data. It offers the health sector a useful benchmark to improve results, based on quality, operational and efficiency indicators.
After 8 years in operation and with more than 150 participating hospitals, the programme is completely consolidated in the Spanish health environment. It is highly valued both by hospitals and health administrations.
In addition to the general TOP ranking, in 2002 its focus extended to include specific clinical areas which help it make a further contribution towards an objective knowledge culture in health services, as many centres that find it difficult to balance suitable overall results also have excellent units whose work can show others the way to go in the future.
The hospital receives a profile with its results according to 6 key indicators showing where it stands compared to other similar hospitals. The hospital itself can find out its capacity for improvement against the group benchmark to be able to set targets and improvement actions in each assessment field.
The TOP 20 programme is currently the only national reference guide to compare results with hospitals on a similar level which is offered free of charge.
TOP hospitals are those which, within each group, demonstrate better balance in the 6 indicators assessed. Once the hospital becomes a TOP Hospital, its good work is recognised by receiving an award from its Health Service at the TOP 20 conference, which Iasist holds each year.
Open: Aimed at all public and private Spanish hospitals.
Free:Participants receive a free of chargeprofile with the Hospital's results compared to hospitals on its level.
Anonymous: Iasist does not publish the list of participating Hospitals nor does it give this information to anyone outside the participating centre. Nor are the results published for individual hospitals; results are always published grouped together for each Hospital level.
