Iasist presents the results from the eighth edition of the TOP 20 Hospitals programme.
145 centres were included in the eighth edition of the TOP 20 Hospitals programme which analyses how hospitals operated during 2006. Out of this number, 119 (82%) are National Health Service (SNS) centres which mainly care for Social Security patients and 26 (18%) were mainly dedicated to treating purely private patients or patients with private insurance. SNS hospitals participating in this study constitute 46% of the total SNS centres.
Aspects most emphasised in this edition
Clinical Areas - Respiratory Area Benchmarks
This edition assesses the Respiratory Area which encompasses pathologies for high hospital frequentation, with a high load of chronic patients and therefore of growing relevancy in an ageing society. Benchmark values are provided for different quality and patient management indicators in three respiratory processes with high prevalence and clinical relevance: pneumonia, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and neoplasias in trachea, bronchia and lungs.
The Respiratory Area assessment included 130 of the centres participating in the "TOP 20 Hospitals" programme in 2007, who attended more than 30 cases in each of the processes which were analysed. The indicators used to assess the care quality were mortality indices and emergency readmissions, as well as complications in the case of NTBL. As far as the degree of efficiency in managing resources was concerned, we have taken into account the average stay, and in the specific case of COPD, repeated admissions during the study year.
Acknowledgements.
Once again, we must thank the selfless work carried out by the members of the Scientific and Assessment Commission, made up of institutional representatives from the regional health services whose contributions are fundamental in terms of improving the programme. Finally we would like to thank the participating hospitals for their trust and enthusiasm, because it would be impossible to carry out this initiative without them.
