On November 6th, the Fourth TOP 20 Hospitals Conference organised by Iasist was held in the Hesperia Hotel in Madrid, with Antares Consulting as the company associated with the programme and with the collaboration of Diario Médico, Inforpress and ESADE.

Attendance at the conference and gala dinner was a complete success, with over 240 participants and the presence of different authorities from 10 autonomous communities.

Mr. Baltasar Magro, Director and presenter of Informe Semanal on TVE, was responsible for hosting and presenting the conference.

In the first part of the conference, Prof. Chris Han, Director of the Strategy Unit of the Ministry of Health in the United Kingdom, gave a presentation on the role of clinical leadership in the improvement of results.

Dr. Eduard Portella, a Partner at Antares Consulting, then chaired a debate on this presentation.

After a coffee break the conference continued with a presentation by Dr. Alfonso Castro Beiras, Director of the Heart Area of Juan Canalejo Hospital. Dr. Castro gave an interesting account on cardiology patient care.

Closing the "Heart Area" session, Dr. Antonio Arias, Director of Iasist Consultancy, presented us with the most important findings and results of the Heart Area Benchmarks. This is the second year that the TOP 20 programme was extended to specific clinical areas and the conference participants showed great interest in the Heart Area.

Finally, and before moving on to presenting the awards to all the hospitals, Dr. Mercè Casas, Managing Director of Iasist, presented the results of the TOP 20-2003 Hospitals Programme, carrying out an analysis of progress over the last four years and concluding with the most significant findings and results from this year.

After her presentation, the awards presentation took place, starting with the Heart Area Benchmarks, which were awarded in 4 groups.

All the award presentations, were hosted by the Hon. Dr. Rafael Pérez-Santamarina, General Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs, accompanied by the health service managers of the award-winning hospitals, representing a total of 10 Autonomous Communities.

Seated at the award-winners Chairman's table were institutional representatives from health services from the following Autonomous Communities, Catalonia, Castile - La Mancha, Castile and Leon, Community of Valencia, Galicia, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, Madrid, Murcia and the Principality of Asturias.

After the conference, all those representing the TOP 20 hospitals, had their photograph taken together with their awards.

After the conference there was a Gala Dinner, also held in the Hesperia Hotel, which was the highlight of this annual event.
