Iasist presents the results from the TOP 20 hospitals programme which included 143 hospitals from 17 out of the 18 different health service management territories and with Top hospitals from 11 different Autonomous Communities.
2002 is a very special year for the history of Spanish health: the completion of the transfer of health services to the Autonomous Communities brings to a close an important cycle for health sector transformation in Spain which began with the General Health Law in 1986.
Aspects most emphasised in this edition
Methodology:
Working from discussions with the Scientific and Consultancy Commissions, the following improvements have been made to the programme methodology:
- Eliminating the rate of occupation as an evaluation indicator.
- In order to identify the Top hospitals from the private centre group, dividing this group into two levels, one level for private clinics with low complexity and a level of private clinics with high complexity.
- Adjusting the indicator for cost adjusted per production unit based on the most detailed information which has been received from participating hospitals.
Clinical Areas
For the first time, an evaluation has been developed for specialisms or clinical areas, identifying the TOP hospitals for Orthopaedics and Traumatology.
The Orthopaedics and Traumatology Benchmark sub-programme included 103 out of the 133 hospitals assessed in the 2001 edition of the TOP 20 programme. For the purposes of this study, the hospitals have been classified into two levels: General hospitals (63 centres) and Teaching hospitals (40 centres). It has included hospitalisation episodes treating pathologies which are classified in Major Diagnosis category 8 (Muscle-Skeleton apparatus).
