On October 25th 2000, the First TOP 20-2000 Hospitals Conference was held in the Winterthur Auditorium in Madrid. Prestigious national and international speakers took part in the event.
Dr. Robert Tornabell, of ESADE, spoke ESADE's contribution to the European Accreditation process and its international ranking amongst business schools. Dr. Jonathan Michael, ex-Manager of Birmingham University Hospital and current Manager of Guys and St. Thomas Hospitals, shared the experience of Hospital Ranking in the United Kingdom National Health Service, highlighting the public impact and what it had meant for the management and clinical practice of British hospitals.
Dr. Michael Claire, independent consultant and adviser of Solucient in the 100 Top Hospitals Programme in the United States, explained the methodological basis of the project, its main results and the view of how it had progressed from its beginnings until the present day.
Dr. Mercè Casas, Managing Director of Iasist, presented the most significant results of the TOP 20 -2000, acknowledging the interest of 140 participating hospitals and highlighting the voluntary nature of the programme for hospitals so that they could identify areas for improvement.
The awards presentation to the hospitals included in the Top 20 was a very emotional event. Dr. Lluis Bohigas, General Director of Planning at the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs, gave the awards, accompanied by Dr. Ignacio Moreno, Deputy Minister of Health of the Andalusian Regional Government, Mr. Josep Prat, Director of the Catalonian Health Service, Dr. José Mª Bonet, General Director of Insalud, Dr. Jon Darpón, Director of the Basque Country Health Service, Dr. Milagros García-Barbero, Director of the European Office of the World Health Organisation for Integrated Health Services and Mr. Graham Harries, Manager of Solucient International.
The figure "La Vida" (Life), sculpted in bronze and silver, presented to the award-winning hospitals in the TOP 20 was a series of 20 unique examples, made by the sculptor Monika Vasquez.
The conference was closed by Dr. Bohigas, during which he congratulated the professionals of the Top 20 hospitals as well as those from the rest of the participating hospitals, for taking up the challenge of assessing their management and clinical practice. Later there was a Gala Dinner in the Villamagna Hotel.
The conference was held with the collaboration of Antares Consulting, Diario Médico and ESADE, who based on pre-existing relationships decided to make small contributions, appearing as collaborators with this project.
