At the beginning of the year 2000, Iasist set up, for the first time in Spain, an initiative to identify the best hospitals based exclusively on the empirical data available and including quality, efficiency and productivity variables: Thus the TOP 20 was born.
The end-product is the publication of information on the results achieved by Spanish hospitals for a group of efficiency and quality indicators and those which combine the best results with good management of resources in order to plot a course to follow.
The objectives are:
- To introduce simple and comprehensive assessment methodology of the running and results of hospitals.
- To offer reference standards that may serve as a Benchmark to increase the operational knowledge of each centre and be able to start improvement measures.
- To recognise the good work of hospitals with better results.
Top 20 Hospitals maintains institutional confidentiality, gives aggregate and anonymous results and is not a hospital ranking.
The participation of 140 hospitals coming from different Autonomous Communities, the presentation of the most important results and recognition of the TOP 20 hospitals at a large conference, and publication of the book "TOP-20: The best hospitals" were the result of this first experience, carried out with great success by the Iasist team.
