Patient Classification System (PCS) designed for acute hospitalisation where the same class of care episodes have a certain level of clinical homogeneity and similar expected consumption of resources.
Each class or group is assigned a Relative Weight (RW) as an expression of relative cost of that group in relation to the average episode in acute hospitalisation.
The clinical sense of the resulting categories, along with their similar consumption properties, has made the Diagnosis Related Groups the most universally used in the PCS to evaluate hospital production. They are currently widely used in many countries as a basis of categorising the hospital product, for management, planning and financial purposes.
Despite their obvious common characteristics, the truth is that different DRG systems co-exist, from those developed by private companies to those developed by individual countries. Among the most used DRG Systems, the All Patient DRG, the CMS-DRG, AR-DRG, HRG or the GHM, stand out.
