Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)

Wed, 04/30/2008 - 12:17 — Iasist

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is the US Federal Agency responsible for the improvement of quality, safety, efficiency and effectiveness of health care. The AHRQ carries out research into health services to improve the quality of health care and to promote making evidence-based decisions.

Among a multitude of research programmes, those concerned with Patient Safety Indicators, aimed at identifying potential intra-hospital adverse effects by using information easily available in hospital administration databases, stand out.

Patient safety indicators are a group of indicators that provide information on potential hospital complications and adverse effects after surgery, determined procedures and delivery care. These indicators were developed after an extensive literature review, and analysis of the ICD-9- CM codes , a review by a clinical panel and an exhaustive empirical analysis.
